Partnership President and CEO Jeff Moseley Receives the Synergy Award for Making Houston Green

On Wednesday, March 12, 2008, The Park People had their spring fundraiser "The Green Tie Affair, Life is Green" at River Oaks Country Club. Among the many awards given that night, the Synergy Award was presented to the State Park Legislative Team. The Synergy Award is given annually in recognition of persons or organizations whose combined works for parks and open space have a greater effect than the sum of their individual efforts, and for legislation that doubles funding for the state parks, from $150 million over a two year budget cycle to more than $300 million.

Jeff Moseley, President and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership, is a member of this team, and worked to support the legislation through the passing of a resolution, and through numerous alerts to Members during the waning days of the session when passage was uncertain.

Mayor Bill White, one of The Park People’s 2008 award recipients, gave a brief “State of Parks” address.

Other members of the State Park Legislative Team include The Honorable Harvey Hilderbran, George Bristol (Texas Coalition for Conservation), The Honorable John Montford, Walt Dabney (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department), Joe Turner (Houston Parks and Recreation Department), Ann Lents (Center for Houston’s Future), Claire Caudill (Garden Club of Houston), Evelyn Merz (Sierra Club) and the Houston Audubon Society.

The annual awards pay tribute to some of those whose remarkable efforts have helped to preserve and enhance Houston’s parks, green space and trails.  In addition to honoring The Park People's annual award recipients, The Park People guests sipped on Mint Juleps during the cocktail reception, while bidding on auction items and purchasing trees for the Brays Bayou Trail Project. During dinner, The Park People supporters listened to Mayor Bill White, one of the 2008 award recipients, give a brief “State of Parks” address.

The Park People’s Mission:
The Park People, a not-for-profit citizens’ organization, advocates for and participates in restoring, preserving and expanding parks, natural areas and trails for present and future generations.

Background:
Since its inception, The Park People has provided almost $4 million in private funds to benefit citizens throughout Houston and Harris County with aggressive parks advocacy; public education and information through newsletter, workshops, seminars and public forums; and consistent lobbying at local, state, and national levels for more and better parks.

All people in the Houston community who use parks and enjoy the benefits of open space are served by The Park People projects like the 2005 renovation of Tony Marron Park in East Houston as well as The Park People’s efforts in 2007 to enhance and increased funding for park land at the state and local level.
