Houston also has a well developed infrastructure for transferring technology developed at area research institutions to the private sector. The Houston Technology Center is the largest technology business incubator/accelerator in Texas and the center for technology entrepreneurship in Houston. The center provides in-depth business guidance, access to capital, introduction to service providers and entrepreneurial education to client companies representing energy, life sciences, nanotechnology, and NASA-origination technologies.
Houston is home to more than 400 software development companies tapping into a large customer base in areas of energy, space science, biotechnology and leading technology research and development operations. NASA's Johnson Space Center is one of the largest software development facilities in the nation. Large groups of software developers are also employed in the Texas Medical Center and in the Houston offices of the nation's largest energy companies.
Three companies on the 2011 Deloitte Technology Fast 500 list have their headquarters in Houston: BBS Technologies, RigNet and Additech, Inc.
Rankings are based on companies being in business at least five years, headquartered in North America, having proprietary technology responsible for a majority of the growth, and growth in revenues. Firms must also have current-year operating revenues totaling at least $5 million U.S. or Canadian Dollars, and are ranked on five-year revenue percentage growth with a base year of at least $50,000.
