Health Care/ Medicine Issues

The Greater Houston Partnership is committed to the economic development of our region's health care industries. The Partnership's membership industries include biomedical, life sciences, health care information technology and health care service providers. In addition, the Partnership coordinates with lawmakers and the business and health care communities to develop initiatives that will increase access to health care, reduce the number of uninsured and control increasing health care costs.

The Greater Houston Partnership actively participated in the 80th Session of the Texas Legislature. In the area of health care, the Partnership supported initiatives which will provide affordable health insurance and funding of CHIP and Medicaid programs. On the federal level, the Partnership supported initiatives to encourage development of the nanotechnology industry and increasing the quantity and quality of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC's) designated in the region.

In 2006 the Partnership passed a resolution in support of smokefree workplaces and public places. The resolution was vital to the City of Houston passing one of the most comprehensive ordinances in the country. Houston's step towards a healthier environment has resulted in similar ordinances passing in surrounding communities.
