Workforce Issues
The Greater Houston Partnership addresses workforce challenges by serving as a liaison between business, education and government entities. Much of this work happens thanks to the Members of the Partnership's Workforce Development Subcommittee.
The Partnership is dedicated to advocating for a highly skilled and highly trained workforce throughout the 10-county Houston region. Working with area businesses, community colleges and government entities, we are creating the workforce we need to keep our region at the forefront of economic success.
The Workforce Development Subcommittee analyzed Gulf Coast Workforce data to reflect:
- industries with above-average growth
- industries with above-average wages
- businesses with huge impact/importance in the Houston economy
- filtered to not include industries where the Partnership historically has not played a role in assisting
- if not already present in the analysis, include the clusters identified by the Partnership. A cross section of key players from each industry will be convened to discuss any workforce development challenges they are currently (or foresee in the near future) having.
The subcommitte's findings led them to focus on workforce issues in the construction industry. A white paper has been developed. Now, focus groups with construction trade associations and employer CEOs/presidents are being planned.
A proposal to develop a task force of superintendents has been drafted to discuss/analyze school districts workforce needs. Feedback is currently being received from key sources on the feasibility of this task force.
The subcommittee is also monitoring workforce development needs in biotechnology industry, one of Houston's fastest-growing sectors.
