With over 35 years of experience in the food industry, Mr. Evelio Fernandez has gained the respect and confidence of people associated with him. Born in Cuba and migrated to the U.S.A. where he received a Bachelors in Business Administration degree from the University of Houston. His career in the food industry began in 1980 as a Sales Representative for a small distributor of Hispanic products. He knew that the key ingredients to a successful career were hard work, dedication, perseverance and a willingness to learn, therefore after his daily sales route, one could often find him picking cases, loading trucks and even making deliveries to the customers. In 1983, his dedication paid off when he was promoted to General Manager giving him access to purchasing, accounting, marketing and public relations.
In 1990, the company was acquired by Goya Foods, Inc., the #1 Hispanic food company in the nation, and Mr. Fernandez became Vice President for Goya Foods of Texas. It was at this location where he introduced the first bean production packing line. Today he runs the Distribution Facility of more than 380,000 square feet while continuing to expand doubling it in size within 4 years.
Mr. Fernandez previously also held the role of General Manager for Goya Foods of California in May 2004 simultaneous to his Texas role, in California he shared his experience with the employees at both distribution centers providing leadership to the Purchasing, Sales, Warehousing, Marketing and Finance/Accounting Departments. Mr. Fernandez's most rewarding project was the completion of the new Houston Plant and Distribution facility which serves Goya as a strategic hub for Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Mexico operations. His leadership skills, integrity and hard work have been a key factor to the growth and steady increase of Goya market share in the Texas and California markets. He has been a member of numerous foundations, non-profit organizations, in the corporate and public sectors, to mention some of them: Board Member of The Greater Houston Partnership, Advisory Board for International Affairs and Development-Americas; The Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; The Houston Hispanic Forum; The Advisory Board for the Laredo National Bank and The University of Houston Mexican American Studies. Mr. Evelio Fernandez and his wife Maria, reside in Houston, Texas with their four children.
