State of Education

About this Event

The Greater Houston Partnership invites you to the State of Education on Friday, May 9 at the Marriott Marquis.

The success of our region relies on a thriving education system providing equitable access to learning at all levels and skill-building essential for Houston’s workforce need. This year’s event will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Wynn Rosser, the recently appointed Commissioner of Higher Education for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Dr. Rosser will share his outlook on higher education in Texas and his goals for his first year in this leadership position.

Following Dr. Rosser’s keynote, a panel of leaders from Houston’s largest community college systems will discuss their role in building Houston’s workforce of tomorrow. The panel will address how House Bill 8, passed during the 2023 Texas Legislative Session, has redefined the funding model for community colleges and incentivized career-aligned talent pipeline development in direct response to regional economic needs.

Speakers include:

  • Mario K. Castillo J.D., Chancellor, Lone Star College System
  • Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D., Chancellor, Houston Community College
  • Dr. Lynda Villanueva, President, Lee College
  • Moderator: Welcome Wilson, Jr., President and CEO, Welcome Group, LLC
