Throughout my career, I have seen first-hand what becomes possible when people can clearly see, and access, a pathway to opportunity. A young person discovers a career they did not know existed and gains the confidence to pursue it. A worker gains the skills to move into a family-sustaining job. An employer finds the talent needed to grow.
These moments can change individual lives. At scale, they can strengthen an entire regional economy.
That potential is what drew me to UpSkill Houston.
UpSkill Houston marked its 10-year anniversary in 2024, the same year I joined the Greater Houston Partnership to lead the initiative into its next chapter. Over its first decade, UpSkill Houston built a strong foundation by bringing employers, educators, workforce organizations, philanthropy and community partners together around a shared goal: expanding economic opportunity for Houstonians while building the skilled workforce our economy needs.
That milestone gave us an opportunity not only to recognize our progress, but also to ask what Houston will require from us over the next decade.
Our answer is clear: We must leverage the great advancements in technology and turn collaboration into greater connectivity and coordinated action across the workforce ecosystem.

More Than a Seat at the Table
UpSkill Houston’s collective table has always been one of its greatest strengths. It brings together organizations with different perspectives, resources and challenges to develop solutions no single institution could deliver alone.
But convening is not the end goal. It is how we build the trust, shared understanding and alignment necessary to act. Now we are turning that into action.
UpSkill Houston is working across sectors to strengthen education-to-career pathways and improve connections among the organizations serving Houston’s workforce.
These efforts advance two outcomes that must move forward together: helping businesses access the talent they need to compete and helping more Houstonians build careers that provide mobility and long-term economic opportunity.
Turning Vision into Collective Action
One of the clearest examples of UpSkill Houston’s initiatives is the new Ready Set Next platform.
Built for Houston by the Greater Houston Partnership and powered by Pathful, Ready Set Next is an AI-powered career navigation platform designed to connect people with careers, education pathways, work-based learning, employers and community resources through one personalized experience.
On August 3, UpSkill Houston will launch the first Ready Set Next pilot. While this is a significant milestone in our strategy, it is only the beginning of what is potentially the most transformative innovation in workforce development and economic mobility anywhere in the country.
The initial phase will focus on enabling people to uncover careers that are aligned to their unique skills, interests and experiences, and connecting them to the education and community partners that can provide them the support, credentials and skills needed to pursue them. Participants in the pilot will use the platform in real-world settings, and their feedback will help strengthen and refine the experience before broader implementation.
Future phases will bring employers more directly into the platform. Their involvement will help ensure Ready Set Next reflects industry needs, increases visibility into careers and workplace opportunities, strengthens connections between employers and the education and workforce partners developing Houston’s talent and ultimately helps them identify qualified new talent pipelines as well as further develop their existing workforce.
This phased approach is intentional. Building a regional career navigation platform requires testing, learning and improving alongside the people and organizations that will use it.
Ready Set Next’s greatest potential lies in creating stronger connections across Houston’s workforce ecosystem and turning a shared vision into a solution that grows more effective over time.

Investment in Houston’s Workforce Model
Houston’s collaborative approach is also gaining national recognition and investment.
This year, Bloomberg Philanthropies selected Houston for a $17 million investment to launch Gulf Coast TradeUp Careers, a regional effort led by Houston City College. The initiative will expand access to skilled-trades education, registered apprenticeships and work-based learning aligned with employer needs and is expected to serve more than 1,350 career and technical education students over three years.

The effort brings together the Greater Houston Partnership, school districts, colleges, employers, apprenticeship organizations and community partners to expand pathways into the skilled trades.
More recently, Walmart awarded a $250,000 grant to the Partnership to advance the workforce priorities of the Houston Economic Mobility Coalition. Working with United Way of Greater Houston, Houston City College, San Jacinto College and other partners, the investment will strengthen regional coordination and connect more people with the skills, resources and relationships that lead to quality careers.
While these investments support different areas of work, they reflect the same belief: Houston’s greatest workforce advantage is its ability to align employers, educators, workforce organizations and community partners around shared challenges.
Strong programs remain essential, but programs alone cannot overcome a fragmented system. We must connect those efforts so people can move more easily from education and training into meaningful careers and employers can more effectively find, develop and retain talent.

Building What Comes Next
Houston has all the right ingredients to become a national model for workforce development.
The talent is here. The employers are here. The educators, workforce organizations and community partners are here. Our opportunity—and our responsibility—is to connect those strengths more effectively.
No single organization can build Houston’s future workforce alone. But together, we can create clearer pathways between learning and work, respond to changing industry needs and ensure more Houstonians can participate in the region’s economic success.
The next chapter of UpSkill Houston will be defined not simply by the organizations we bring together, but by what we build and accomplish together.
