Fresh off welcoming an estimated 4.5 million passengers during the FIFA World Cup 2026™, Houston Airports is turning its attention to the infrastructure needed to support continued growth.

The airport system has received more than $126 million in federal funding for projects at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).

At IAH, the funding will support upgrades to the Skyway train system, airfield drainage and Terminal D’s HVAC systems. HOU will receive more than $62 million to rehabilitate Runway 13R-31L, one of the airport’s primary runways, with construction expected to begin in 2027.

“These projects strengthen the systems that keep our airports safe, reliable and moving,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports, in a press release.

The funding is part of a broader $1.7 billion investment by the Federal Aviation Administration to modernize airport infrastructure and improve the travel experience nationwide.

Recent Upgrades at IAH

The latest funding builds on a series of recent improvements at IAH. Terminal A was upgraded with seating that includes workstations, tray tables and integrated charging, while the Terminal D ticketing lobby was refreshed with lounge-style seating, charging stations and greenery.

Earlier this year, IAH also opened its redesigned Terminal E, streamlining the international travel experience with self-service bag drops, check-in kiosks, expanded curb space and a 17-lane TSA checkpoint.

Earning Global Recognition

Houston Airports’ investments in the passenger experience earned multiple honors at the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards, which are based on surveys of travelers worldwide.

HOU was named the Cleanest Airport in North America, while IAH ranked among the world’s top 10 airports for dining. Houston Airports also received the World’s Best Airport Art award for the fourth consecutive year.

Skytrax separately evaluates airport operations and customer service through an independent audit process. HOU retained its 5-Star Skytrax Airport Rating for the fifth consecutive year, remaining the only airport in North America to earn the distinction, while IAH maintained its 4-Star Skytrax Rating for the ninth straight year.

Strengthening Global Competitiveness

A strong airport system is essential to Houston’s economy. Investments like these help ensure Houston can continue to accommodate growing passenger demand while remaining competitive for international business, trade and major events.
