George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) has opened its newly expanded Terminal E, creating a faster and more streamlined experience for international travelers.

The opening marks a major milestone in the IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program (ITRP) — a $1.46 billion investment to upgrade the airport and strengthen the region’s role as a global gateway.

Air France and KLM are among the first airlines to transition to Terminal E, with more airlines expected to follow in the coming weeks. One of its standout features is the Amadeus bag drop system, commonly used at major European airports. The system lets passengers check luggage in just a few steps or get help from an agent. IAH is the first airport in Texas and the second in the nation to have it. The terminal also features a 17-lane TSA checkpoint, one of the largest in the country.

Other key features include:

  • Self-service bag drop stations
  • Self-service check-in kiosks
  • Expanded curb space with 11 departure lanes and 8 arrival lanes
  • Dining options both before and after security, including Einstein Bros. Bagels and Chick-fil-A

“This is about giving our passengers the world-class experience they deserve the moment they walk into the terminal,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports, in a news release. “As we prepare to welcome soccer fans and introduce new nonstop flights to Rome this summer, Terminal E serves as a source of pride for Houstonians and reflects the city’s role as a leading international gateway and improves efficiency for our passengers.”

Progress Underway

Terminal E kicks off the beginning of the final phase of the ITRP. United Airlines’ $2.5 billion Terminal B is expected to open later this year. It will span three levels, include 22 gates and feature a Central Processor built to handle up to 36 million passengers a year. In 2024, the expanded Terminal D-West Pier opened, adding 160,000 square feet and six new gates.

Strengthening Houston’s Global Connectivity

Houston has long been one of the most globally connected regions in the U.S., with IAH serving as a critical hub for international travel. That connectivity plays a vital role in the region’s economy. With Terminal E now open, the airport is better equipped to handle an expected surge in international travelers, including hundreds of thousands of visitors for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ and the World Baseball Classic, along with a projected 2.2 million passengers during spring break.
