Read the Q&A below to learn more about his perspective on Houston’s energy future and his vision for the region.
What initially made you want to become more involved with the Greater Houston Partnership?
Houston has been incredibly good to me, both personally and professionally. I’ve spent nearly four decades helping companies grow, attract capital, and create opportunities, particularly in the energy industry. Participating and serving on the Board of Directors of The Greater Houston Partnership provides an opportunity to help shape Houston’s future, strengthen our business community, and ensure that Houston remains one of the best places in the world to build a business and raise a family.
From what you have seen, what do companies that get the most out of their membership tend to do well?
The companies that benefit the most are the ones that engage rather than simply join. They build relationships, participate in important conversations, and look for opportunities to contribute. I’ve always believed that business is fundamentally about relationships and involvement. The Partnership creates an extraordinary environment to develop those relationships and be involved across industries and across a wide variety of issues. The more you put into it, the more you get out of it.
What is one thing you think business leaders misunderstand or underestimate about Partnership membership?
I think some leaders underestimate the Partnership’s ability to influence Houston’s long-term economic future. It’s much more than a networking organization. It brings together business and city leaders who can help shape public policy, attract investment, develop talent, and strengthen Houston’s competitive position. Collectively, we can accomplish things that no individual company or public entity could accomplish on its own.
When a company is deciding whether to join, what should its leaders consider beyond the immediate benefits?
I would encourage them to think beyond what the Partnership can do for their company and consider what their company can do for Houston. A stronger Houston ultimately benefits every business operating here. Membership is an investment in the economic vitality of our region, our workforce, and our future. I believe companies and their leaders have a responsibility to help strengthen the communities where they operate and live.
How has being connected to other business leaders through the Partnership been valuable to you personally or professionally?
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the world’s leading CEOs and business executives. What I particularly value about the Partnership is the opportunity to connect with leaders outside my own industry. You gain different perspectives, better understand the challenges facing our community, and develop relationships with people who share a genuine commitment to Houston. Those relationships are personally rewarding and make us all better business leaders.
Why is it important for companies of different sizes and industries to be represented in the Partnership?
One of Houston’s greatest strengths is the diversity of its economy. We’re the energy capital of the world, but we also have tremendous leadership in healthcare, technology, aerospace, manufacturing, and many other industries. Equally important, small and emerging businesses are tomorrow’s large employers. We need all those voices at the table. Houston is strongest when businesses of every size and industry are working together toward a common vision.
Looking ahead, where do Partnership members have the greatest opportunity to make an impact on the region?
I believe Houston has an extraordinary opportunity over the next decade. We’re uniquely positioned at the intersection of energy, technology, artificial intelligence, and global infrastructure investment. Houston can lead the world in delivering affordable, reliable, and increasingly sustainable energy while supporting the next generation of technological innovation. But we also have to invest in education, workforce development, and the infrastructure needed to support that growth. The Partnership can play a critical role in bringing business leaders together to turn those opportunities into reality.
Whether you’re looking to expand your network, grow your business or help shape the region’s future, there’s a place for you at the Partnership. Become a member.
