Miller Outdoor Theatre, the century-old cultural landmark in Hermann Park, has kicked off a series of major improvement projects designed to enhance its visitor spaces and infrastructure.
This slate of upgrades marks the theatre’s most significant investment in its facilities since 2014, when the venue underwent a renovation that included a roof replacement and upgrades to its lighting, sound and stage systems.
As part of this effort, the theatre is undergoing a $1.8 million overhaul of its core facility systems to modernize the venue for performers and production teams. The work includes replacing rooftop HVAC units, updating under-floor and overhead air distribution to the stage and upgrading electrical components that power daily operations. Portions of the stage, including the orchestra pit, will also be rebuilt to enhance safety and performance conditions.

Construction is already underway and is expected to be completed by June 2026, with performances set to resume later that summer.

The Gateway Plaza also recently broke ground on the northeast corner of the venue, creating a reimagined entrance featuring three new shade structures that will guide guests into the theatre. The project also includes upgraded pedestrian paths that improve accessibility and better connect the theatre to the rest of Hermann Park, along with new drainage and flood-mitigation work to address long-standing water issues. The Dining Bosque, a popular gathering space for visitor picnics, will also be refreshed with new picnic tables and site repairs.

“We’re thrilled to have broken ground on the Gateway Plaza Project,” said Claudia de Vasco, Managing Director of Miller Outdoor Advisory Board. “It’s a fitting start to Miller’s next century – an investment in spaces that reflect who we are as both an iconic arts venue and a welcoming public gathering place, inviting everyone to experience the performances and memories that make Miller so special.”
The project is part of the theatre’s ongoing 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign launched in 2023 to support long-term improvements.
